Pride Cycles
Builder Profile

Builder Statement:

Here at Pride Cycles we know titanium bicycles. With over a quarter century of experience in the titanium bicycle industry our craftsmen are unsurpassed. We pride ourselves on quality and practicality. Many manufacturers push over priced flashy designs on their customers but at Pride Cycles we believe that quality work and quality materials partnered with optimum geometry are necessities to creating top notch frames.

We are PRIDE Cycles. We are a small group of dedicated bicycle frame builders with tons of experience. After leaving one of giants of the Ti industry we truly missed the art of building bicycle frames. After looking into other avenues our hearts told us to go back to frame building. In November of 2008 we opened PRIDE Cycles and have loved every minute of it. We are now in full control of what we love to do and there is no better job than a job that lets you do that.
We offer road, mountain, cyclocross, tandem, and bmx frames. The list does not end there though. We hope that when someone has an idea for something that has never been done before they turn to us. Building unique frame designs is always an adventure we are exited to take on. We are also in the process of designing some accesories such a new handle bar design. Keep an eye out on our site, PrideCyclesUSA.com. They are going to be neat!

About David Atkins

David has been building titanium bicycle frames for many years. It would not be an overstatement to say the he has built more titanium bicycle frames than anyone else in the US and probably the world. David was the plant manager and chief frame builder for the vast majority of his time at a major group of American bicycle brands. In the summer of 2008 David decided to leave the company that he was working for and it didn’t take him long to start to miss building bikes. In November of ’08 he opened PRIDE Cycles. David builds each PRIDE frame by hand and that means that each frame has an unmatched amount of knowledge going into each step of the frame building process.

Why PRIDE?

 Quality
PRIDE frames are crafted only from USA milled titanium tubing and parts. Our knowledge of titanium is unsurpassed. All of our craftsmen, and craftswomen, strive to achieve maximum quality by paying extra attention to detail. Each process of building a frame is held to exceedingly tight tolerances. Frames are built in small runs; instead of building 100 frames at a time we just build a few. This allows us to watch each process as close as possible without being pushed to go too fast to chase a number. In addition to the standard methods of creating a quality frame we have experience to offer. Experience is key in frame building. Technology is great but it is a poor substitute for experience. Those tricks of the trade never hurt and they can only be learned through years of experience in titanium fabrication and frame building.

We are a small frame builder
Small frame builders have more time to pay attention to details. Bicycle frame building in a demanding process if the end result is supposed to be among the best. The larger manufacturers can build decent products but they cannot match the quality and detail that the small frame builder can achieve. They larger builders often have many inexperienced employees but the technology to stamp out cool looking products. It all about aesthetics with them.

Affordability
At PRIDE Cycles we keep a small group of skilled frame builders and a minimal number of office workers; we do not have many paychecks to write. We also buy our parts from a machine shop set up strictly to machine bicycle frame parts. We can buy parts at a lower cost than we can make them and those parts are higher quality than those that we have seen made in the giants of the frame building industries machine shops.

Warranty
All PRIDE titanium and steel frames come with a lifetime transferable warranty. If you decide to quit cycling or your kid outgrows their PRIDE frame it can be sold without any voiding of the lifetime warranty. You can find more information on the PRIDE lifetime warranty

Why Ti?

Ask a frame expert about titanium and the first thing you will likely hear is “Ti is as light as aluminum but as strong as steel.” While the comparison is not exact it is pretty close. Titanium has a density that is nearly twice that of aluminum and nearly half of the density of steel, 56% percent to be exact. What that means to a frame builder is that we can build frames that are lighter than aluminum, while using tubing with a wall thickness that is the same as steel frames. It all comes down to the essential strength to weight ratio. Ti wins that battle against any material. Titanium has the longest life span of any frame material. The exception corrosion resists Ti has is a bonus too. It does not wear out.

Titanium frames can be tailored to give whatever ride characteristic a cyclist wants. Generally titanium frames are fairly stiff but not harsh. Ti doesn't beat you up. Titanium absorbs shock extremely well but it does not rob your pedal strokes of power. If a cyclist prefers a super stiff frame the PRIDE’s frame builders can fabricate the frame to be stiffer. If its extra lateral stiffness you want, we can do it. If it’s more vertical compliance, we can do it. We can build frames that are stiff all around. They can but crafted to be pretty flexible too. It all comes down to what the rider wants. Tuning ride qualities is what custom frame building is all about.

Custom Frames

PRIDE frames are as unique as our customers. PRIDE Cycles can build you whatever you want, as long as you want something you can be proud of. We will make road frames, mountain frames, 29er frames, single speed, cyclocross frames, BMX frames, tandem frames, or any other type at whatever size and geometry desired. Customs can be crafted from titanium or 4130 chromoly. If a cyclist owns a frame and likes the current fit and wants it made out of titanium or chromoly we can use his or her current frame and mimic its size and geometry. We can set the current frame in our jigs and match the vital points perfectly.

Available in titanium or 4130 chromoly steel.
PRIDE exclusive extended dual junction seat stays that add unsurpassed lateral stiffness and vertical compliance (optional at no extra charge) We build frames with traditional style seat stays as well.
An elliptical top tube that further increases lateral stiffness in the front
Symmetrically bent chain stays offer tire clearance for up to a 28C tire
Head tube mounted cable bosses for quick and easy adjustment during ride

The PRIDE exclusive extended dual junction seat stays don't give a harsh ride like similar designs do. The difference is in the material. Titanium absorbs shock very well. Similar designs have been built out of aluminum and steel. The steel was somewhat forgiving but the aluminum frames were extremely harsh.

Quality

Every PRIDE frame is handcrafted from USA milled titanium or aircraft grade 4130 chromoly. Measurements are held to a .010” or 10/1000” tolerances. We cannot use less than the best of materials and put our name on a frame. “Bargain titanium” is prone to cracking and that is unacceptable. Each frame goes through quite a lot of checkpoints throughout the frame building process. When a head tube it cut it’s length is checked for accuracy. When a chainstay is bent it is checked for clearance before mitering and welding. PRIDE has a no gap policy when it comes to mitering. Most bike frames are built to "loose" alignment and then aligned by grinding dropouts and twisting the frame. At PRIDE we understand that this is the wrong way; we align and realign throughout the building process. Our frames are straight from the beginning! Each weld had to be perfect so the welding is done in an oxygen free environment. Our quality control program is incredibly demanding.

Updating that nice old frame

Lots of folks out there have some vintage frames that they can't use anymore because they have become outdated; so they think. The old press in bottom brackets, 1" head tubes, mountain bikes with no disc brake mounts, etc. The list goes on and on. Ti and steel can be updated. For instance, Charles has and old ti frame that he is in love with that was built in Cambridge, Massachusetts years ago. He wanted a new crankset and guess what.........his old press in style bottom bracket left him with zero options. Charles did the smart thing and shot us am email to get a quote on upgrading his bottom bracket shell to the current standard, 68mm English threaded. We gave him his quote and a week later his bike is being updated. It is in the mill now getting the old BB shell cut out.

That's one of many problems with this carbon fiber movement that is sweeping the industry. You can't replace of upgrade anything on a carbon frame. But heck, it won't last long enough to need updated. Aluminum gives a similar problem. Although you can cut out and replace parts on an aluminum frame it doesn't pay to do so. Aluminum goes thorough a few different process after it is welded up and before painting. Like heat treating for example. If a head tube was cut out to update it to 1 1/8" it would have to be re-heat treated and that would just make the frame too brittle.
